A Bund is defined as a retention facility (including walls and base) built around an area where potentially polluting substances are handled, processed or stored, for the purposes of containing any unintended escape of material from that area until such time as remedial action can be taken.
Bunds come in many shapes and sizes, and can be made from steel, plastic or concrete. The critical issue with Bunds is they must be capable of collecting and retaining the pollutant or hazardous materials stored in case of any incident or event which may lead to a leak. They must have made from the correct materials, be the correct size to take the ‘worst case’ spill and also be strong enough to take the pressure of the liquid if they are completely filled.
Due to these requirements bunds must be tested prior to going into service, and every three years thereafter.
